Paul Craig Shumard went to be with the Lord on Thursday November 21, 2024, at Swedish/Endeavor hospital in Chicago, IL. Paul was born in Dodge City, KS. On September 1, 1942. Paul attended Lincoln Elementary school and graduated from Dodge City High School in 1960. Paul attended the University of Kansas on an educational scholarship and graduated with dual degrees in history and political science in 1964. He also attended the University of Chicago. Paul served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969 in South Korea. In 1973 Paul began employment with the Social Security Administration, with whom he was employed with for over 51 years. Paul was an avid reader of history, military history and politics. Over his lifetime he collected over 1,000 books, many of which were first editions and signed first editions. Paul was an ardent fan of KU basketball, the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears. Paul enjoyed annual trips with his father until his passing in 1989, then had annual trips with his sister and brother-in-law until her passing in 2011. Paul also enjoyed annual trips back to Kansas for Christmas and Memorial Day with family in Jetmore, McPherson and Wichita. Paul is survived by his brother-in-law Charles Leet Jr., Jetmore, KS., niece Stacy (Lochmann) Rhodes and husband Paul, Orange, TX., nephew Lance Lochmann and wife Sujata, Columbia, Mo., nephew Lincoln Lochmann, Dodge City, KS., nephew Trey Rhodes and wife Shea, Orange, TX., nephew Reese Rhodes, Beaumont, TX., niece Mandy Robertson, Oklahoma City, OK., cousin Loueen (Nelson) Ensminger, McPherson, KS., cousin Dara Shumard, Wichita, KS., cousin David Nelson, Phoenix, AZ., and his extended family of Rachel Murphy, Shawn, and Paul Atangan, Jerween Atangan and Jamie Canieso and Garland Massey, all from Chicago, IL. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Olin and Marie (Nelson) Shumard and sister Carolyn Kay Leet. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place. The family suggests memorials to Friends of the Rogers Park Library, 6907 North Clark Street, Chicago, IL. 60626. Burial will be at Fairmont Cemetery, Jetmore, KS. at a later date.
