1940-2024
Norman Lewis Barringer, 84, passed away Monday, December 23, 2024, in Hutchinson. He was born July 1, 1940, in Highland, the son of Jess and Mildred (Cole) Barringer.
On October 28, 1966, Norman married Barbara Ellan Davis in Hutchinson. They welcomed their daughter, Christina, in September 1967 and their son, Nathan, in December 1971.
He graduated from Sabetha High School in 1959, later enlisting in the Air Force from 1962 to 1965, earning an honorable discharge as an airplane mechanic with the Organizational Maintenance Squad.
Norman's work in Hutchinson began with Snyder Chemical. Later, he picked up work for Sutton Motor Co. part-time for 24 years and full-time for Sonoco Paper mill, as Head System Operator, for 38 years, until retirement in 2007.
Norman spent his free time walking around the town looking at every car lot, occasionally making an unexpected buy. He loved reading and jigsaw puzzles on his iPad.
Norman was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Lawrence; sister, Virginia Felts; brother-in-law, Johnny Davis; and sister-in-law, Linda Davis.
His wife survives Norman; their children, Christina (James) Smith, Nathan Barringer, Heather Barringer, and adopted son, Isaac Smith; brother, Gerald (Robin) Barringer; sister, Velma Beeghly; sisters-in-law, Jerrie (Bill) Pitts and Theresa (Garald) Salmans; five grandchildren, Lance Smith, Andrew (Marcella) Smith, Jessica (Malcolm) Deason, Bryce (Jennifer) Smith, and Nick Barringer; eight great-grandchildren: Tyson Smith, Landon Smith, Jayci Smith, Carver Smith, Maddilynn Tillman, Christian Tillman, Azaylea Deason, and Maverick Deason. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive him.
Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily until the service. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Elliott Mortuary.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th Ave., Hutchinson, with Pastors Shawn Penrose and Garald Salmans officiating. Military honors will be conducted by McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard.
