1935-2024
Marjory Darlene Holmer, 89, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away Tuesday morning, December 24, 2024, at her home.
Marge was born March 17, 1935, northeast of Strawn, in Coffey County, KS, the daughter of Orlin Kenneth and E. Lucille (Woods) Atherly. She grew up on the family farm and attended Kennedy and District #17 rural schools before graduating from Strawn High School. She worked for United Telephone in Burlington, KS, until moving to Topeka in 1955 where she was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone until the birth of her first son. Marge returned to work in the office at Alco after her youngest son entered school. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Topeka.
On May 18, 1958, she and Richard Duane “Dick” Holmer were married at St. John Lutheran Church in Topeka. They became the proud parents of three sons. They suffered the loss of Terry Holmer, their oldest son, on October 26, 2011. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Glen, and Duane Atherly, and three sisters, Colleen Eccles, Louise Atherly, and Joan Atherly.
Marge leaves Dick, her husband of more than 66 years; her sons, Brad Holmer (Teresa), Silver Lake, KS, and Shawn Holmer (Michelle), Topeka; a daughter-in-law, Marsha Holmer, Topeka; 7 grandchildren, Summer Holmer, Jenni Pierce, Derek Holmer, Taylor Holmer, Jared Holmer, Amy Howley, and Travis Haukenberry; 6 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Don Atherly, Burlington, KS; several nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.
Marge enjoyed playing cards and train dominoes with family and friends. She also enjoyed hosting family and friends in her home for holidays and birthdays. Marge loved to shop and looked forward to her annual trip to Maple Leaf Days. Most of all, Marge loved being wife, mom and grandma to her loving family. She will be sorely missed by her entire family.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 30, 2024, at Christ Lutheran Church, 3509 SW Burlingame Road, Topeka, KS 66611.
The family will greet friends from 9:30 A.M. Monday until service time at the church.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday at Graceland Cemetery at Burlington, KS.
