1941-2025
John Henry Chandler, 83, passed away on March 14, 2025, at the Homestead Assisted Living in Eudora, Kansas. He was born on July 17, 1941, in Garnett, Kansas, to Bradford and Maxine Stutesman Chandler. The oldest of four children, John grew up on a farm northwest of Garnett, where he developed a strong work ethic and a love for the land. He attended Iantha, a one-room schoolhouse, before graduating from Garnett High School in 1961.
On September 11, 1965, John married Martha Daughtery of Kincaid, Kansas. Together, they raised their son, Eric John Chandler. John and Martha later moved to Eudora, Kansas, where they both worked at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant in De Soto, Kansas. John retired from the Kmart Distribution Center in Lawrence, Kansas, after many years of service.
John was known for his love of attending auctions and estate sales, a hobby that he thoroughly enjoyed. On most Saturdays, you could find him at one of these events, expanding his collection of treasured items. He also enjoyed gardening, often planting a large garden with his wife Martha. Their bountiful harvests were shared with friends, family, and neighbors, along with the beautiful flowers they grew. John had a particular fondness for growing the hottest peppers he could find, often giving them away as a token of his affection. Over the years, he planted several trees, including black walnuts, which he took great pride in. He also enjoyed sports, and was a big fan of KU Jayhawks Basketball.
John was preceded in death by his parents Bradford and Maxine, his beloved wife Martha in April 2018, and his brother-in-law Ronald Dunlap in August 2024.
He is survived by his son Eric (Lisa) and grandson Ethan of Bend, Oregon; his sister Lois Chandler of Augusta, Georgia; his brother Lloyd (Bill) Chandler (Janene) of Kansas City, Missouri; his sister OraLee Dunlap of Mulvane, Kansas; as well as several nieces and nephews, lifelong friends, and wonderful neighbors who kept a watchful eye over him.
John's legacy will live on through his family, his love of nature, and the many lives he touched with his generosity and good nature.
Cremation will take place and the family will be doing a private service. Condolences for the family can be left at www.feuerbornfuneral.com.
