Herbert “Herb” Eugene Bach
1931-2025

Herb Bach, 93, of Jetmore, Kansas passed away in peace Friday, January 24, 2025 with his wife Cynthia and family by his side.

Born in Burden, Kansas, December 27, 1931, to Fred and Florence (Feuerborn) Bach, Herb’s family moved to Garnett, Kansas shortly thereafter where he grew up with his three younger siblings.

Herb graduated from Garnett High School in 1949 and began working in the local quarry. Desiring a better future, Herb left Garnett for railroad school in Omaha, Nebraska.  After six months of training, he began his career with the Santa Fe Railroad where he worked for 46 years.  Herb’s work with the railroad was interrupted by the Korean War in 1951, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army.  Herb served our country for two years, during which time he spent about six months stationed 100 miles north of the current North-South Korean border.

In 1954, Herb met the love of his life, Cynthia Dice, on a blind date in Paolo, Kansas. They married on February 22, 1955 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa, Kansas and began their lifetime together.   Herb and Cynthia continued to move westward across the state, living in several different communities and working his way up as a depot agent with the Santa Fe Railroad.   They settled in Jetmore, Kansas in 1964 and established their home on Eakin Street in 1965, where they still live today.  This is where they raised their four children and created many happy memories together.

Herb loved to hunt, fish, camp and play cards.  The family went on countless weekend fishing trips every year and always took an annual vacation, showing their children the country. In retirement, the couple flew to Australia, drove to Alaska, took bus trips across America and continued to camp.  Herb was an active member of the St. Lawrence parish, local Knights of Columbus and American Legion continuing to attend meetings until he passed.  Herb served his community as a city councilman in the 1970’s, was a champion horseshoe player winning many a contest and actively rooted for the KC Chief’s and Jetmore/Hodgeman County Longhorns, continuing to attend hometown football games through the 2024 season. He had a very dry wit and often used it during his card playing or relating to his friends and family.  His sense of humor and humility were known to many in Jetmore and will be missed by all his friends and family.  Herb loved his family and nothing meant more to him than having everyone together to celebrate the holidays or just play pitch.

Herb is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Cynthia (Dice), his four children Rex (Beverly), Wisconsin Dells, WI; Ron (Theresa), Jetmore; Denise Strader (Robert), Dodge City, KS; and Doug (Martha), Kansas City, KS; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren and his brother-in-law, Bill Demoret.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Don (Bernetta); sisters, Doris (Glen) Lickteig, Phyllis Demoret, and a great granddaughter.
