1931-2024
Goldie Lee Sissom, beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, in Chanute, Kansas, at the age of 93. Born on July 18, 1931, in rural Fredonia, Kansas, the daughter of Reuben and Ora (Hendry) Delaney. Goldie was a true treasure to all who knew her.
A proud graduate of the Fredonia High School class of 1949, she carried the values of hard work and kindness throughout her life. Goldie's personality was warm and welcoming, as she always loved spending time with her family. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family; she had a way of making everyone feel at home with her gentle demeanor.
Goldie married Kent Eugene Sissom on July 26, 1949, in Fredonia, Kansas and he preceded her in death February 12, 2007.
Goldie was a passionate cook, renowned for her exceptional baking skills. Cakes, pies, bread, cookies, and candies were just a few of the specialties that filled her kitchen with warmth and love. Together with her beloved husband Gene, she cultivated a small farm, growing an array of vegetables that they proudly sold at local farmers markets. This shared labor of love not only nourished their family but also brought joy to many in their community.
Goldie had a green thumb, enjoying the simple pleasure of gardening. Her days were often spent tending to her blooming flowers and thriving vegetable patches. She also cherished her animals—cats, dogs, and chickens—and they, too, were a source of happiness in her life. Goldie found joy in visiting with friends and family, always eager to lend an ear or share a smile.
She is survived by her devoted children, Sheryl Hanslik (Scott) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Randy Sissom (Sandy) of Osawatomie, Kansas, and Lori Smith (Dan) of Ottawa, Kansas. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Angie Sissom, Nick Hanslik (Rachel), Jessica Smith, Marlene Millbern (Tim), and 23 great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forth the love and kindness that Goldie embodied in every aspect of her life.
Goldie is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Dema Griffin, and her brothers Damon and Oren Delaney. She will also be reunited with her loving husband Gene and her infant son Robert, whom she held dear in her heart.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Goldie's remarkable life. A visitation will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, both held at Wickham Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Fredonia, Kansas. She will then be laid to rest at Bachelder Cemetery, where her spirit will be honored and remembered.
Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Flag Fund or Avenue of Flags, and they may left or mailed to the funeral home 510 North 7th, Fredonia, Kansas 66736.
As we reflect on the beautiful memories of Goldie Lee Sissom, we are reminded of her warmth, generosity, and the countless lives she touched through her kindness and love. She will forever remain in our hearts.
