Dennis L. Sherman
1948-2025

Dennis L. Sherman, 76, passed away early Saturday morning, March 29, 2025, at his home in New Strawn, Kansas.

He was born July 27, 1948, in Eureka, Kansas, the son of James Allen and Iva Eleanor (Drake) Sherman.  He grew up in the Emporia area and graduated from Emporia High School in 1967.

After high school, Dennis proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, enlisting in 1967.  He was honorably discharged in 1971 with a rank of Sargeant.  Dennis served in the 3rd Marine Division and participated in the Tet Offensive in Vietnam.

On January 25, 1974 he married Karlyne Rose Britton in Peabody, Kansas.  Around the time their son, Carl Sherman, was born, they moved to Waverly, Kansas.

Dennis and Karlyne owned and operated Sherman Auto Parts in Waverly for many years. After the sale of the parts store, Dennis started working at Wolf Creek, from where he retired after more than 20 years. They enjoyed camping, usually at Melvern Lake. Dennis was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Masonic Lodge.  During his youth he was a member of the Boy Scouts of American and as an adult he volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 139.  On March 31, 2007 Dennis was baptized and he and Karlyne became members of the New Strawn Community Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents, a brother Douglas Sherman, and a brother-in-law Eldon Britton.

He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Shannon Sherman, grandchildren, August and Randy Sherman; an aunt, Wanda Lynn; sisters Nancy (Larry) Greenfield, Jan (Mike) Stair, and Linda Johnston; sister-in-law, Sherie Sherman; brother-in-law Dale (Linda) Britton.  He also leaves nieces and nephews; Amanda Petersen, Tammy Greenfield, Heather (Josh) Oswald, James (Ashley) Sherman, Dustin Stair (Pam), Daniel (Ann) Stair, Cassie (Jeremy) Harvill, Janet (Kevin) Eck, Cheri (Darren) Hopson, Paul Britton, Matt Britton, and Lance Britton.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, Kansas.  Burial will follow at Stringtown Cemetery.  A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home.
