1929-2025
Alice Marie Sleezer Chambers, 95, of Burlington, Kansas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Thursday evening, January 9, 2025, at the Coffey County Hospital in Burlington.
Alice Marie McDonald was born August 28, 1929, the daughter of Randall Harrison and Mabel Blanche (Dugan) McDonald, at the farm east of Leonardville in Riley County, KS. She graduated from Grandview Grade School and Leonardville High School.
On June 12, 1948, she and Roy Kenneth Sleezer of Gridley, KS, were married at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Leonardville. They lived in Satanta, Claflin, and Oberlin before moving to Gridley. After her husband lost his sight due to an accident they moved to Burlington in 1959.
Alice was a long-time active member of the Burlington Methodist Church. She served for a number of years on the Missions Committee at the church.
On October 1, 1959, Alice became a representative for Stanley Home Products and continued until her retirement. She was employed by the Daily Republican Newspaper, later called Coffey County Today, on October 1, 1965, and was employed there just shy of 33 years until her retirement.
She was a former member of the Burlington Business and Professional Women, the Forget-Me-Not Club, and was a charter member of the Coffey County Eagles Auxiliary #5577, and the Royal Neighbors of America.
Her husband, Roy “Dude” Sleezer, preceded her in death on December 24, 1994.
On November 18, 2000, Alice and Kenneth “Bud” Chambers were married at the Burlington Methodist Church. They lived in Alice’s home in Burlington. They visited Bud’s farm in Woodson County often and continued raising cattle until 2016. They enjoyed traveling and visited many places around the country. They enjoyed gardening, church, playing cards, and feeding and watching the birds on their deck. They enjoyed going to dances, with Bud performing at many, especially the ones at the Burlington and Yates Center Senior Centers. They enjoyed the time they spent with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Bud, preceded her in death on July 24, 2021.
Alice was also preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Randall McDonald, Jr., Ruby Francis, Clyde McDonald, and Leona Gaultney.
She leaves her children, Gail McGirt (Steve), Lloyde Sleezer (Brenda), and Russell Sleezer (Carla), all of Burlington; 9 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the Burlington Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery at Burlington.
The family will meet with friends from 9:30 A.M. until service time Thursday at the church.
