MARYSVILLE, Kan. – The Smoky Valley Girls Tennis team placed 1st place in five out of the eight tournaments this season, defending their CKL and now Regional Championships from a season ago.
The Doubles team of Campbell Gaskill and Karee Adam would find themselves in the Regional Final for the second straight year, but this time finished with a better result, taking first by defeating teammates, Lily Heline and Kayla Norberg. Head Coach Vince Warbinton said, “Karee and Campbell had a stellar regional tournament. They dominated the competition, and in four matches lost a total of seven games.”
Warbinton noted the gutsy performance from Norberg and Heline to reach the finals, as they defeated Marysville in a 3-set battle on Friday, before upsetting Hesston’s doubles team in the semifinals on Saturday. Warbinton added, “We are excited to watch Kayla and Lily continue to make some noise in the state tournament this weekend.”
Lena Raucholz took fourth place playing singles, she will look to bring home her fourth state medal in four years this weekend in Topeka, she fell to the eventual champion on Friday, from Marysville.
Kelsee Adam followed up her runner-up finish at league with another strong performance at regionals. She won her play-in match 9-0 before falling to the regional runner-up in the round of 16. Coach Warbinton said, “We’re excited to see Kelsee play next season.”
The Lady Vikings will travel to 3-1A State at Topeka-Kossover Tennis Center on Friday, October 14, through Saturday, October 15. Welcome and Player Introductions will begin at 10 a.m. Friday. Matches will begin at 10:30 a.m.
