McPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Cassie Chick was nominated as the new McPherson County Treasurer Thursday night by Republican Precinct Committee members at a party convention held at the McPherson Coop Credit Union. Chick, of Galva, is the Republican nominee for the position to succeed Teresa Nelson, who is retiring from that position ahead of the end of her current term.
Chick explained to Ad Astra News following her nomination her current work made her familiar with the office. “I knew Teresa was retiring, and I had worked with those girls in the field that I am in,” she explained, adding “I started asking some questions about it, and that’s how I decided I was going to take the leap of faith.”
Chick has already been working with Nelson on the transition and told us she will also lean on an experienced staff in the office. “They’ve all been there several years, and of course learning as I go,” she said.
The new treasurer, whose official appointment is made by the governor, is a Durham native and graduated from Hillsboro High School and Hutchinson Community college and has for a little over ten years worked for Kansas Secured Title.
Her official start date hasn’t been finalized, but it will be at least a couple of weeks before she is sworn in. Chick will serve out about the final year of Nelson’s term, and barring something unexpected she will begin a full term in office next October when County Treasurers in Kansas take office.
38 of the 52 Republican precinct committee members participated in the convention, including three by proxy.
Following the nominating convention the Committee held their biennial reorganization, during which the current party officers were re-elected for two-year terms. These include county chair Cheryl Stieben, vice-chair Bob Arnold, Secretary James Bohnenblust and treasurer Royce Janssen.
