GARNETT, Kan. — Appointment of members to two advisory boards were made by Garnett City Commissioners Tuesday. The Commission last month deferred action on filling two open positions on the Library Advisory Board and the Tourism Advisory Board.
Both library board positions were open seats, and from four candidates Commissioners noted were very highly qualified, the Commission selected Brandie Cooney and Leslea Rockers to fill those positions.
There were two positions on the Tourism Advisory Board up for appointment with three applicants, two of who are currently on the board. The one who wasn’t,Radhika Bhakta, was appointed to the board as there was a lot of desire expressed to one Commissioner that there should be a hotel operator on the board, which Bhakta is. The Commission then reappointed Krystal Baugher to that board.
The Commission approved a number of annual designations done at the first of the year during Tuesday’s meeting. This includes the annual GAAP waiver for preparation of the city’s financial statements which are done in compliance with Kansas budget laws.
Also approved was designation of the Anderson County Review as the official newspaper, and designation of local banks as depositories, with Patriot’s Bank designated for Municipal Court funds.
The Commission gave final approval to renewal of the cereal malt beverage license of Country Mart, which has completed the required paperwork and background checks were completed on employees.
In the wake of the storms that impacted the region last week, the Commission gave approval to a new inclement weather and outages policy. City Manager Travis Wilson said as conditions worsened the weekend before last he realized the city did not have any written policies dealing with closure of city offices in situations such as the winter weather event which led to multiple closures the first part of last week.
Commissioners also discussed a proposed 25-year extension to the city’s GRDA power purchase agreement and presented proclamations for Thursday as National Religious Freedom Day and Jan. 26 through Feb. 1 as National School Choice Week.
