Due to the Tuberculosis outbreak in Wyandotte County, Kansas, the Reno County Health Department has received many phone calls and wanted to provide the public with some information.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a treatable disease that has been around for centuries. Active TB is contagious, but latent TB cannot be spread and doesn’t have any symptoms. There are normally a handful of cases each year here in Reno County and the health department follows each case to ensure treatment protocols are followed. The Kansas City TB outbreak poses a low risk of spreading beyond the area. There is testing available to determine if you have TB, but no vaccine is available.
If you are concerned about an exposure to TB or have more questions, please contact your medical provider, or contact the Reno County Health Department at 620-694-2900.
