RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners Wednesday tabled to March 12th action on a request for funding made by Prairie Dunes Country Club related to the 2029 US Senior Open it will be hosting. The Hutchinson City Council has approved support for the event last week.
This had been on the consent agenda for action, but Commissioner Ron Vincent asked for additional time to discuss the request based on comment he’s heard from his constituents on the request, specifically the extent Prairie Dunes would profit from hosting the open.
Lee Ann Cox from Visit Hutch noted Prairie Dunes expects to break even on hosting this event, as they did for the 2006 US Senior Open. Commissioner Randy Parks also said he wants more information, specifically the return on investment the County received when Prairie Dunes hosted the 2006 event.
Commissioners approved another extension to a moratorium on large scale commercial solar developments, this time to May 1. The current extension expires Saturday, and this extension will give Commissioners time to review recommended regulations the Planning Commission approved last week
The Commission is planning to have a study session next Tuesday, March 4 at 5 p.m. The location of the meeting is to be announced. To review the proposal that is now in their hands. Potentially final action could come as early as March 13. If regulations are adopted prior to May 1, the moratorium will end sooner.
Commissioners approved purchase of property south of the Courthouse Annex. This is part of the former Shelton Motors property and is being purchased from the current owner, Dynamic Electronics, for $142,500. The closing costs on the purchase will be split 50/50 between buyer and seller.
Commissioners approved submission of the 2026 fiscal year funding grants for Community Corrections and juvenile evidence-based evidence programs through the Kansas Department of Corrections. It also approved policy revisions related to transportation of youth and fiscal reporting to comply with updated KDOC standards.
