HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At Monday’s meeting the Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education approved purchase and implementation of Creative Curriculum alongside a teaching assessment tool covering 15 preschool and six child care classrooms. Cost is being covered through federal Head Start funds. Related to childcare the district accepted a $2.2 million bid from Wiens and Company to construct a new daycare facility. Wiens had the low bid of five received.
The Board approved a just over $37,000 expenditure for three 5-ton HVAC rooftop units for stock purposes. The district has at least 15 such units in operation that are between 17-25 years old and are experiencing high failure rates due to age. The purchase is being done via a Greenbush contract for group purchases.
The Board approved a bid from Wray and Sons Roofing for just over $36,500 to replace a section of roof at Hutchinson High School over the music records room which has numerous leaks. This roof would have a ten-year warranty, and while the other bid received proposed a 20-year warranty but cost more than $31,000 more.
A new position was created within the district’s business office. The Financial Operations Specialist will oversee and manage business operations for 308 while ensuring compliance with policies, regulations and best practices.
The board viewed a recent bus wrap project, funded by Durham School Services. The presentation showcased a new initiative aimed at enhancing the visibility and branding of the district’s transportation services. Design of the wrap was created by USD 308 students and staff.
The Board approved annual renewal of a software package used to bulk configure the various Apple devices used in the district, the 2025-26 MOU with JAG-Kansas along with early graduation requests from 12 students contingent on completing all state and district graduation requirements,
The 2025-26 district calendar was approved, with the school year beginning for most students Aug. 13. High School sophomores through seniors and kindergarten students will start later. The board also took a look at a proposed meeting schedule for the next school year, which they are expected to take final action on at their next meeting.
Following executive sessions on personnel and student matters the Board approved a monthly personnel report.
The Board was also informed of a donation of a 2023 Ford Expedition from Rusty Eck Ford of Wichita. This vehicle will be used at the Career and Technical Education Academy to familiarize students with some of the newer technology being used in vehicles.
