HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson will present the Reno County Housing Needs Assessment to the City Council, outlining the region’s urgent housing needs and opportunities for growth and investment. This comprehensive study identifies a need for over 1,000 new housing units by 2035, based on projected population growth, current housing stock limitations, and anticipated economic development demands, and emphasizes the importance of diverse, quality housing to meet the needs of all income levels and demographics.

“Our community is at a turning point,” said David Sotelo, Director of Strategic Growth. “Recent economic development strides have positioned Hutchinson for future success, but meeting our housing needs is crucial to sustaining growth and attracting new businesses and residents. I look forward to continue this work along with our housing partners. “

The housing study identifies challenges such as limited housing stock, rising construction costs, and a shortage of higher-income housing, which has increased competition for lower-value homes. However, the report also highlights positive momentum from existing city and nonprofit programs that have successfully rehabilitated older homes, reinvigorating neighborhoods.

City Manager Enrico Villegas added, “This study provides a clear path for strategic investment and collaboration among public, private, and nonprofit sectors to ensure every resident has access to quality housing.”

The City encourages local investors, developers, and community leaders to join efforts in creating innovative housing solutions. Public support remains strong, with 70% of survey respondents backing public funding for housing improvements.

The presentation will take place at the next City Council meeting on January 7, 2025 starting at 5:30 pm at City Hall. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend and learn how this plan will shape Hutchinson’s future.
