BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 is still looking at the potential of bringing water from the city of Hutchinson to the new Crusader Corner Daycare at 56th and Plum.
Superintendent Cindy Couchman gave the USD 313 Board of Education an update on this Monday night, and she said the city is at least willing to look at running a service line from the daycare to connect to the city system. Reno County however says they will not allow a service line to be run, only a water main or use of a private well.
Discussions are continuing on the service line option, which right now is the school district’s preference, and with that plans to install a private well are on hold. If USD 313 has to go the private well route it would have to set up a public water supply system which brings with it numerous regulatory requirements.
The Board approved purchase of new uniforms for the Buhler High School marching band. Fruhauf Uniforms of Wichita submitted the low of two bids received at just over $111,000. If everything goes right the new uniforms should be in for next school year.
The Board also approved bids for intercom speakers from Ideatek for nearly $49,000, to be funded from a Sale and Secure Schools grant, and from American Chemical Systems to replace a dishwasher at Buhler High School. Cost for this including electrical work by Zenor Electric comes to just under $31,000, much lower than two other bids received.
An out of state travel request was approved for the Buhler High School FFA Chapter to attend the FFA National Convention October 22-26 in Indianapolis. 12 members of the chapter, the largest FFA Chapter in Kansas, along with two sponsors will be attending the convention, during which several members are being recognized and the chapter will be honored as a 3-Star Chapter, the highest award able to be bestowed upon an FFA Chapter in the Nation.
The board also accepted grants from the Buhler Education Foundation and United Way of Reno County for the district daycare facilities and a memorandum of understanding with Dillon Nature Center for nature education program services.
Among personnel items the board accepted the retirements of Prairie Hills Middle School 6th grade math teacher Letha Warner and Union Valley 2nd grade teacher Joanne Burckhart effective at the end of the school year.
