LINDSBORG, Kan. – In a rematch of games swept by Halstead on December 20, Smoky Valley hosted the Dragons on Monday night. The Halstead girls got the better of the Vikings again, but the Smoky Valley boys got off to a red hot start and did not let up, scoring a team season high in a 23-point win.
Girls-Halstead 56, Smoky Valley 43 – Facing the #2 team in Class 3A, Halstead, Smoky Valley got off to a very good start, actually holding a 16-10 lead early in the second quarter. The Dragons woke up from there, going on a 14-0 run to take a 24-16 lead. Smoky Valley stayed strong, trailing by just three at 31-28 at halftime, but a 16-9 third quarter gave Halstead a ten point lead after three and they went on to lead by as many 16 in the fourth quarter. The Dragons used a balanced attack led by Bailey Bernal and Addisen Wills with 15 points each. Jordy Schroeder added 10 as Halstead moved to 17-1 on the season. Smoky Valley was led by Kenzley Haxton who scored a career high 14 points. Kat Blanchat and Elsie Boughfman added 12 points each as the Vikings are now 6-12.

Boys-Smoky Valley 67, Halstead 44 – Smoky Valley got a quick jump on Halstead, taking leads of 12-0 and 16-2 early. Halstead went on a 9-0 to get within five midway through the second quarter, but the Vikings stretched their lead back out to 15 by halftime. They extended their lead to 21 late in the third, but an 11-0 run by the Dragons had them within 10 at 57-47 early in the 4th. However, a 12-0 run by Smoky Valley stretched the lead back to 22, as the Vikings finished with a season high 67 points and a 23-point victory. Braylon Olson dropped a career high 22 points, including nine in the final quarter. Ty Heitschmidt added 16 points and Titus Griffith scored a career high nine with seven in the second quarter. Smoky Valley snapped a seven game losing streak, improving to 4-14. Halstead dropped to 7-11 with the loss. They were led by Braxton Creed with 21 points.
