ELLINWOOD, Kan. – Playing in one of the most balanced districts in all of Kansas, Trinity Catholic got their district season off to a strong start Friday, routing previously undefeated Ellinwood 35-8.

It was the Class 1A District 7 opener for both teams. The district also includes Inman, last year’s 1A state runner-up, Conway Springs, which won the district last season, and rapidly improving Sterling.

Trinity used a powerful ground attack in methodically pulling away. Gavin Wilson scored the first of his three touchdowns late in the first quarter on a 15-yard run.

Eric Armour doubled the lead early in the second quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run, and Wilson matched that 10-yard scoring run later in the second quarter.

Drew Dechant had a big interception in the end zone at the end of the first half for Trinity, which carried the dominance into the second half. Wilson added a 6-yard touchdown run, and Armour’s 32-yard touchdown – coming right after the Celtics snuffed out a fake punt – wrapped up the scoring.

Trinity improved to 2-2 and will host Inman next week.
