ABILENE, Kan. – The McPherson High School Boys Wrestling team competed in Regionals in Abilene Feb. 21-22, finishing 9th in the tournament and qualifying three wrestlers for the State Tournament in Salina.
Three seniors placed in the top four in their respective weight classes to punch their tickets to Salina: Catch DeLaney finished 3rd in the 215 class while Jase Fitzmorris (175) and Brock Richardson (190) each finished 4th. Many other Bullpup wrestlers came close to placing, but faced the unenviable task of facing some of the state’s best wrestlers in any class, let alone 4A. The full team results can be found below.
Two of the three athletes who qualified to state this year are returning to the tournament, while DeLaney will get his first and only trip to Salina. Fitzmorris placed 6th in the tournament last year while Richardson did not place.
Fitzmorris, who signed to wrestle at Cloud County Community College, has had an impressive feat to reach state after suffering a knee injury during the football season that kept him sidelined for the second half of the year. DeLaney and Richardson are future college athletes as well as DeLaney will stay home to play football at McPherson College and Richardson signed to play baseball at Butler Community College.
The trio will travel to Tony’s Pizza Events Center for the 4A State Tournament Friday, Feb. 28 – Saturday, March 1.
