McPHERSON, Kan. (MacBulldogs.com) — Director of Athletics Josh Daume has announced that Ian Thomson will be the next head coach of the McPherson College women’s soccer program.
“We’re thrilled to have Coach Thomson join our staff at McPherson College,” Daume said. “Having a proven leader in the KCAC take over our women’s soccer team creates immediate momentum for our program. His ability to recruit outstanding student-athletes and develop them not only on the field, but in everything they do was what stood out to us in the search process.”
Thomson brings 15 years of college coaching experience to McPherson College and is no stranger to the KCAC, spending 10 years as the head women’s soccer coach at Tabor College.
While the head man of the Bluejays, Thomson racked up 74 career wins and made the KCAC Tournament eight times. He also coached 51 All-KCAC players, 97 Academic All-Conference selections, and 52 Academic All-Americans. He was a two-time KCAC Champions of Character Coach nominee and led the Bluejays to back-to-back KCAC Team of Character awards in 2014 and 2015.
“What an incredible opportunity this is to be the next Women’s Coach at McPherson College,” Thomson said. “This past year has allowed me to reflect on my coaching career, and just how important it is to me. God has truly blessed me and my family to be able to accept this position.”
Prior to arriving in Hillsboro, Thomson spent five seasons as the head women’s coach at Independence Community College where he became the all-time winningest coach in program history. In his final season with the Pirates, the team reset the record books in several categories including most wins in school history.
“Thank you to Mr. Daume and the search committee for their belief in me to lead the Women’s Soccer program,” Thomson said. “I am ready to get to work building McPherson into the strong winning program that we all know it can be.”
Thomson was also a standout player at Tabor, and was an All-KCAC selection in 2004 and was named team captain in 2005. He also made the Academic Team in his three seasons with the Bluejays.
“I will be forever grateful for Tabor and the last 11 years,” Thomson said. “I wish them all the best going forward, except when they have to play McPherson College.”
“I’m looking forward to working with and supporting Ian as he leads our team into the 2025 season and beyond,” Daume said. “His vision and plan for building a highly competitive program at McPherson should have our current and future student-athletes excited for the future.”
Thomson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Tabor College, and holds a master’s degree in Recreation and Sport Science from Ohio University.
