Sterling Upsets Tabor in the Semi Finals of the KCAC Tournament

HILLSBORO, Kan. – In a huge upset, six-seeded Sterling College got the win over number two seeded Tabor College in the semi-final game of the KCAC tournament on Saturday, March 1 with a final score of 83-64.

The Lady Warriors got after the Bluejays from the get go, starting on a 12-1 run with a full-court press that had Tabor reeling. By the end of the first quarter, Tabor had turned the ball over 10 times which Sterling used to take the 20-5 lead.

Sterling continued to hound the Bluejays defensively and extended their lead to 47-27 at the half.

Tabor did not go away quietly, cutting the lead down to 12 with five minutes to play. The Lady Warriors kept their cool and extended the lead back to 19 by the final buzzer.

Korynn Clason led all scorers with 27 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Kali Briar and Evie Gill led Sterling in assists with three each while Briar also put up 15 points, going 7-10 from the floor.

Alissa Heskamp and McKenna Vogl each contributed 14 points. Vogl also came out with a game high five steals and grabbed six boards while Heskamp amounted four steals.

The Lady Warriors were a hot 50% from the floor, including 50% from beyond the arc. Sterling turned Tabor’s 22 turnovers into 23 points and outrebounded the Bluejays 34-24.

With the win, Sterling will advance to the championship game where they will take on the five seed, Friends University in Wichita, Kan. at the Garvey Center on Tuesday, March 4.
