Southeast Kansas State Wrestling Championships Recap: Day 1

There are wrestlers going for state titles tonight, and more that came just one match short.

Iola ‘s lone boys qualifier, Konnor Mills, lost his opening match in the 4A tournament in Salina, but came back to win his consolation opener. Humboldt’s Cole Mathes won his opening match Friday in the 3-2-1A tournament in Hays then lost in the quarterfinals, the only Cub boys wrestler to make it past the first day with Curt Shannon at 126 and Brody Gunerman at 165 both losing their two matches.

One wrestler going for gold tonight in the 3-2-1A tournament in Haya is Jayhawk Linn’s Landon Higgins, who took a 11-2 major decision over Xzander Donner of Russell in the 106 pound semifinals in the 3-2-1A tournament in hays. The Jayhawks also have Tanner Holt at 113 and Denton White at 126 alive in the consolation bracket after splitting their Friday matches.

Also at 3-2-1A, Erie’s Seth Welch lost by a technical fall to Jake Grizzle of Lyons at 150 pounds. Aiden Wilson at 113 pounds won his opening match, and lost in the semi finals. He will begin his consolation matches this morning. Both qualifiers from Fredonia and Neodesha went 0-2 in Friday action.

Chanute’s Cade Small is wrestling for a title at 190 pounds after taking a 17-8 major decision in his semi-final over Kyler Jackson of Holton.

Fort Scott will have two wrestlers going for state titles tonight, with Trace Metcalf at 150 getting a first period famm over Bryson Crotinger, and Brody Gomez taking a 7-0 decision over Luke Kerns of Buhler at 165 pounds. Lennox Vann at 175 and Jaden Garcia at 285 fell in their semi-final matches.

In the 4A girl’s tournament in Salina Iola’s Addilyn Wacker lost by an 11-2 major decis pound semifinal match to Kahlyn Davis of Halstead. Iola’s Zoie Hesse lost her opening match a 190, but came back to win her opening consolation match.

In other 4A matches, Chanute’s Kiley Dillow will be in the championship match at 170 pounds after taking just 22 seconds to in Stefania Aranguiz of Rose Hill in her semi-final Chanute has four other girl’s wrestlers in the consolation round after losing opening matches Friday and winning the consolation opener including Riverlee Allen at 100, Jarynn Hockell at 105, Kyli Baylor at 190 and Madison Dutro at 235.

Burlington’s Hailei Potter took a second period fall of Cara Hiebert of Larned to advance to the 135 pound final. Olivia Lyons was pinned by Leiannah Landreth in the semifinal of her match at 120. Chanute’s other four state qualifiers – Isabella Matney at 100, Nevah Myers at 105, Adella Riggs at 115 and Paige Ferrera at 170, are also in the consolation rounds today.

At the 3-2-1A tournament in Hays Humboldt’s Taevin Baylor was pinned in the 3rd round of her semifinal by Zoe Brown of Plainville at 155 pounds. Homboldt also has alive in the consolation bracket Jordan Hency at 1005, Savanah Koch at 190 and Gabriella Vargas-Garcla at 235.

All four Erie girl’s wrestlers remain alive in the consolation bracket,including Devery Kenny at 110, Aubrey Taylor at 130, Madi Cope at 135 and Addi Martin at 1:40. Fredonia has three of their four still in the medal hunt, with Eden Hill at 135, Addison Hughes at 140, and Victoria Grade at 170.

Jayhawk-Linn’s Alanya McCarty lost in a 3rd period fall to Kylee Hodges of Oakley in her semi-final at 120 pounds. They also have RownDay at 115, Halley Fortman at 125, Graycee Willard at 140 and Vivien Clair Smith at 190 on the consolation side.

Uniontown’s Madison Shepard lost her semi-final match at 100 pounds by a first period fall to Carolina Northrup of Stockton. Shepard was the only one of Uniontown’s three qualifiers to make it past the first day.

Consolation matches at Gross Coliseum in Hays for the 3-2-1A resume this morning at 9, with the championship matches to begin later this evening.
