HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson High football isn’t known for a quick-strike offense, but the Salthawks showed they have that ability Friday in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Four touchdown drives were two plays or less, and the Salthawks dominated the first three quarters in their 52-28 win Friday at Gowans Stadium.

Robert Hunter capped Hutchinson’s first scoring drive, as on the second play, he ran 32 yards to the end zone.

Wichita West answered one play later to cut Hutchinson’s lead to 7-6, but the Salthawks dominated the next two-plus quarters, scoring the next 45 points.

Zion Burgess was the biggest benefactor in Hutchinson’s strong offensive night, as he rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. Hunter added 69 yards and two scores.

The Salthawks special teams also had a good night. Taysen Runyon hit all his extra-point kicks and also booted a 24-yard field early in the second quarter. Late in the third quarter. Jax Heneha blocked a punt, which was recovered by Chris Lachenmaier for a touchdown.

The Salthawks will head to Maize South next Friday for a second-round matchup. The Salthawks won at Maize South 28-23 earlier this season.
