HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A week after suffering one of their most puzzling losses this century, the Hutchinson High football team came back Friday more than perturbed.

A group of angry Salthawks scored early and often and blasted Newton 50-7 on Friday at Gowans Stadium. It was an impressive answer to last week’s 7-3 loss at Eisenhower, a game that saw the Salthawks allow just six first downs.

Hutch scored first on an impressive 11-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard Robert Hunter touchdown run. Zion Burgess then had touchdown runs of 7 and 15 yards, and Hunter capped off a strong first half with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Kade Smith with 37 seconds left before halftime.

The one-way traffic continued in the third quarter as Burgess ran 56 yards for another score on the third play of the third quarter. Jeremyah Gaitho-Karanu added a 2-yard touchdown run, and Skyler Graham wrapped up the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown catch from Terrell King.

The Salthawks finished with 16 first downs and 342 yards of offense, compared to 11 first downs and 149 yards for Newton. Burgess had 117 rushing yards for Hutchinson.

The Salthawks will head to 2-0 Maize South next week.
