Salthawk sports roundup: Boys soccer gets massive win over reigning 5A champion

The Hutchinson High boys soccer team continued to prove they are a contender in Class 5A on Tuesday, as the Salthawks had their best win in years, beating two-time reigning Class 5A state champion Maize South 4-3 at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Salthawks trailed 1-0 at halftime but went wild offensively in the second half with four goals. Cole Bleything started with a header off a Landon Nusser corner kick. Nusser scored the next goal himself on a volley from a Griff Galyon assist. Galyon then scored two goals, coming from Bleything and Jack Yoder assists.

Hutchinson improved to 9-1-1 and is currently in the No. 2 seed in the Class 5A West standings, a half game behind Salina South. The Salthawks will play Thursday at Derby.

Girls tennis – The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Ellie Foos and Ayla Booe earned second place at the AVCTL Division 1 meet on Monday.

The No. 2 doubles team of Addie Lewis and Payzlee Regier came in eighth place.

In singles, Rylee Miller was 12th, and Maggie Kaplan 13th.

The Salthawks will head to Salina Central on Saturday for regionals.

Girls golf – The Salthawks came in third place at the AVCTL Division 1 on Monday at Sim Park.

The Salthawks carded a 383, just two strokes behind second-place Maize South.

Ava Burlie finished in seventh place with an 89. Three other Salthawks broke 100, including Lydia Patterson (97), Brynn Hall (98) and Lily Rodriguez (99).

The Salthawks will host a regional on Monday at Carey Park.

Volleyball – The Salthawks won four matches at a Saturday tournament in Great Bend. After dropping the first match to the hosts, the Salthawks came back to beat Liberal, Newton, Salina Central and Wichita West.

After a pair of AVCTL Division 1 losses on Tuesday to Maize and Maize South, the Salthawks are 13-13.
