The Hutchinson High boys basketball team had a strong second half Tuesday and defeated Valley Center 60-47 in Valley Center.
Hutchinson was led by Lamar Govain, who scored 20 points, and Terrell King added 19.
Hutch improved to 6-8 and in 13th place in the Class 5 A West substate standings, but the Salthawks are just two games behind eight-place Hays.
Girls basketball – The Salthawks had a strong defensive effort Tuesday at Valley Center and beat the Hornets 41-30.
Hutch held Valley Center to 12 points in the first half and five in the fourth quarter.
Tenley Keeton led Hutchinson with 10 points, all coming in the first half.
The Salthawks are now 9-5 and are ninth in the 5A West standings and just a half game behind eighth-place Andover Central.
Boys swimming – The Salthawks finished third at a 10-team meet last Thursday in Salina.
The Salthawks scored 341 points, 59.5 points behind second-place Hays but 62 points ahead fourth-place Rose Hill.
Logan Most won the Salthawks only event, taking the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1 minute, 54.33 seconds. Most also finished second in the 100 freestyle, finishing in a time of 51.79.
Jordan Graham finished second in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:24.92.
Also finishing second was the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:45.52. The team included Most, Graham, Ethan Nichols and Griffin Davenport. The 400 freestyle relay team also was second (3:59.31), and that team included Most, Graham, Nichols and Zac Guillen.
Bowling – Both Salthawks teams came in third at a triangular last Thursday in Salina.
For the boys, Tanner Cunningham led the Salthawks with a 592 series. His best game came in his last, when Cunningham bowled a 235. The Salthawks scored 2,193.
The girls bowled a 1,680, and they were led by Alexis Jones’ 426 series. Jessie Reed had the best individual game, opening the meet with a 164.
