KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Playing a grueling stretch of four nationally ranked teams in a five-game span, the No. 11-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team earned another key road point on Saturday at No. 18 Kansas City.
Both Hutchinson and Kansas City scored second-half goals and the Blue Dragons earned a 1-1 draw with the Blue Devils.
Hutchinson is now 7-0-3 overall and 4-0-3 (15 points) in the Jayhawk Conference. Kansas City is 5-1-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons play host to No. 14 Cowley next Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
The Blue Dragons had another strong defensive effort after being out-shot 19-6 overall and 7-4 in shots on goal.
Hutchinson freshman goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower had six saves, including three saves on point-blank shots.
A scoreless tie through halftime, the Blue Dragons scored first when sophomore Jayda Wyatt struck from long distance with a goal on a free kick in the 51st minute for a 1-0 lead. After a KCK foul, Wyatt was set up from 35 yards out. She hesitated on her run-up to the ball and got Kansas City goalkeeper Karly Angle move off her mark. Wyatt ripped a shot just under the cross bar, for an unassisted goal, her fourth of the season.
Kansas City immediately put pressure on the Blue Dragon back line. The Dragons had a bad clear and the Blue Devils made them pay when Jordan Bedard lobbed a shot over Slothower into the upper right corner of the goal to knot the game at 1-1 in the 60th minute.
The Blue Dragons had a couple of corner kicks as their best offensive opportunities after KCK tied the game. A Kaitlyn Edwards shot attempt off a Dragon corner just missed over the cross bar. The Blue Dragons had to turn away a late Blue Devil scramble in front of the next with 1:15 to play in the game to keep the game tied.
