MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. – The Moundridge Wildcat baseball and softball teams began their season in the final week of March and carrying over into the first week of April. After their first two weeks, the baseball team is 2-2 and the softball team is 5-1 on the year. The school’s Powerlifting team also went to Conway Springs for the 1A meet, leaving with some hardware and multiple new state records.
BASEBALL
Moundridge Varsity Baseball started their season Friday, March 28 with a road doubleheader against Canton-Galva. The Wildcats had hot bats in the twin bill with 30 combined runs and 23 combined hits, winning 14-4 (6 inn.) in game one and 16-0 (3 inn.) in game two. The pitching staff had a terrific day in the nine combined innings with 12 strikeouts.
Following the opening week, Moundridge moved their next games back one day due to Friday’s weather, playing on the road against Sedgwick Thursday, April 3. The Wildcats would fall in both games though, losing 12-4 in game one and 15-2 in game two against a fiery Cardinal squad. Moundridge put up an early fight in both battles, but Sedgwick answered back immediately.
Moundridge’s JV team is 0-2-1 with an 8-8 tie against Smoky Valley then falling in two games against Haven 17-5 and 4-3, according to their GameChanger profile. The Wildcats will play at Hillsboro Tuesday, April 8 and at Inman Friday, April 11.
SOFTBALL
Offense has paved the way for the Moundridge Varsity Softball team as they average over 10 hits and 15 runs per contest through six games, starting the first two weeks with a 5-1 record. The team started off on the road at Canton-Galva with two blowouts, winning 23-2 and 21-2. The Wildcats had 23 combined hits and drew 16 walks while also taking advantage of multiple errors by Canton-Galva.
The Wildcats followed up with their home opener against Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic, splitting against the Lady Celtics. The Wildcats fell 18-6 in game one, but turned it around in game two 17-2. Moundridge had seven errors in game one, but their defense only had one in game two. The offense backed them up as well with nine hits and nine walks drawn.
Just like the baseball team, the doubleheader at Sedgwick was moved to Thursday, April 3. The Lady Wildcats kept their momentum rolling with a sweep against the Lady Cardinals, winning 11-4 in game one and 13-10 in game two. The three-game win streak moves them to 5-1 to start the season.
The team will be back in action Monday, April 7 at home against Sterling, followed by road doubleheaders at Hillsboro Tuesday, April 8 and at Inman Friday, April 11.
POWERLIFTING
The Moundridge Powerlifting team traveled to Conway Springs March 29, with multiple lifters winning medals.
The team’s lone girls powerlifting participant finished on top in the 165 class, setting new state records. Sam Strausz won all three lifts in the weight class, lifting 145 in the bench, 265 in the squat, and 185 in the clean, which all were new state records. Strausz’s efforts alone put Moundridge in 11th place out of 18 schools.
The boys team finished in 8th place out of 25 schools in 1A powerlifting. Paul Grill had an impressive showing in the 156 wight class, finishing in 2nd after having the 2nd best bench and clean in the class. Logan Wulf left with some hardware too, finishing in 2nd in the HWT class, finishing with the best squat at 505 lbs., and the 2nd best clean at 265. Braden Denhartog finished in 4th place in the 242 class, however he set a state record for the Clean lift with 305 lbs. lifted. Other results include Mac Bretz finishing in 5th in the 148 class and Thomas Jenkins finishing in 6th place in the 220 class.
