AUGUSTA, Kan. – On Tuesday, the McPherson High Softball team put together two impressive performances on the road, where they were able to sweep the Augusta Orioles to remain undefeated against their league opponents.
Addison Chapman was again dominant on the mound for the Bullpups, striking out 11 batters in the shutout, giving up just two hits, and two walks. After an RBI groundout in the first, the Pups would add to their 1-0 lead after a 3-run inning as Kelcy Bergstrom, Sayge Salmans, and Reanna Eilrich each drove in a run.
Eilrich led with 2 RBI’s in the game, batting 2 for 3, while Haely Hagemann was 4 for 4 at the dish with an RBI in the 8-0 win.
The basepaths were crowded throughout Game 2, as rain sprinkles turned into a steady shower over the duration of the contest. Two runs crossed the plate for McPherson, before the Orioles opened with five runs of their own.
The Bullpups would regain the lead in the top of the second with a four-run inning, but Augusta would again respond scoring two in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-6 lead. McPherson would respond in a big way, scoring 13-runs in the third, as Karter Alvord drove in two runs with an RBI-single before Sayge Salmans’ double would clear the bases, giving the Pups a 19-6. Alvord and Salmans would both go 3 for 5 on the night, combining for 11 runs batted in, in the 24-10 win in five innings.
“Conditions for this game were anything but optimal,” said Bullpup Softball Coach Danica Fitzmorris after playing through a downpour in Game 2. “I am proud of our kids for hanging tough through the conditions to come out on top with two wins tonight.”
McPherson moves to 12-2 overall and will have the rest of the week off, before hosting Mulvane on Monday, for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The Wildcats have just one loss in league-play, and Coach Fitzmorris looks forward to the contest, expecting both teams to rise to the challenge.
