McPherson Sports Roundup: Tennis Wins 4A Regional, Volleyball 2nd at Weekend Invite

MCPHERSON, Kan. – McPherson volleyball went 4-1 at Saturday’s Home Invitational, finishing runner-up to champion Bishop Carroll. The Bullpups fell to the Golden Eagles in the day’s final match, 21-25, 18-25.

Ava Romero finished with 27 kills, 33 digs, and 5 blocks to lead her squad. Brooke Doile added 10 aces and 48 digs, and Alex Romero had 94 assists.

McPherson, now in third place in the 4A West Standings at 20-7, will host Buhler and Mulvane at the Roundhouse on Tuesday. The Bullpups are a combined 3-0 against those teams this season.

Tennis

McPherson tennis edged out Champman for first place at the 4A Buhler Regional on Friday. The Bullpups totaled 18 points to finish ahead of Chapman and Buhler.

Teammates Maryn Sandbo and Kyndall Sandbo entered the tournament as the third and fourth seeds respectively. Both lost in their semifinal match setting up a meeting in the third-place match where Maryn came out on top, 6-2, 7-5.

Rigs Kuhn and Brodie Kuhn worked their way through the doubles bracket as the number one seed, defeating Circle’s Londyn Soto and Makya Thornton in the championship match, 6-2, 6-0. Alexandria Rodriguez and Avery Unruh also qualified for state with a sixth-place finish.

4A State Tennis will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Vaughan Tennis Center in Winfield.

 

Golf

McPherson golf competed at the 4A Wamego Regional on Monday, finishing fifth in the 11-team field. The Bullpups shot a 425 on the day.

“We had such a great year filled with record-breaking performances and great golf,” said Head Coach Treg Fawl. “The girls played hard and battled to the very end. I am proud of every single one of them.”

Brodie Kuhn was McPherson’s top placer individually, medaling in 10th with a 92. She qualifies for 4A State, held October 16-17 in Salina. Reese Elliot shot a 106 to place in 20th.

 

Cross Country

McPherson cross country brought home solid results from Saturday’s Invitational at El Dorado State Park. The boys earned a third-place team finish with four Bullpups medaling inside the top 24. The girls were fifth in the final standings with two medalists.

“Both teams have done a great job of pushing themselves in practice the past few weeks and working together towards the goals that they set at the beginning of the season,” Head Coach Nikolous Rempe said. “We look to carry the momentum from today into the postseason meets the next three weeks.”

Wichita Collegiate will host the league cross country meet at the Cessna Activity Center in Wichita on Thursday.

Soccer

McPherson Soccer improved its 4A West standing with a pair of wins last week. The Bullpups (5-6-1) are 10th with four games remaining in the regular season. A solid finish could mean gaining two or three more positions.

McPherson defeated Junction City, 4-1, on the road last Thursday. Borin Heang, Dayveon Crawford, Hayden Hoxie, and Hunter Mendez each contributed goals.

This week, McPherson will host Winfield on Tuesday for senior night, and travel to Hutchinson on Thursday.
