Lady Warriors Come Up Short in Leavenworth

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – Sterling College women’s basketball dropped their first contest of the new year, losing 92-80 to Saint Mary University. 

The Lady Warriors got out to a quick start, leading 9-3 within the first minutes of play. However, the Lady Spires were able to rally back and tie the game at 13 to end the first quarter.  

Kali Briar came out with the hot hand in the second quarter, scoring 14 of her 20 points, and giving Sterling a two-point advantage heading into the half.  

Korynn Clason tried to keep it going for the Lady Warriors in the third frame, accounting for 15 of the 23 points scored. Despite the offensive push, Saint Mary made a run of their own, shooting over 63% from the field and racking up 29 points. 

The Lady Spires were able to extend their lead in the final quarter, outscoring Sterling 24-16 to end the game.  

The Lady Warriors were led in scoring by McKenna Vogl with 25 points, followed by Korynn Clason with 24. Briar led the team in rebounds with eight and contributed four assists. Alissa Heskamp led the team in assists with seven. 

Sterling College (9-5, 5-3) will take the court again Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. at Friends University (7-6, 5-2).
