Hesston College Athletics Make a Splash on the National Stage

Hesston College athletics found success on the national stage this last week as the powerlifting and disc golf teams competed at their respective national championships. The Larks brought home a team national title and two combined all-American finishes from the weekend.

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Hesston College powerlifting team brought home several pieces of hardware from Powerlifting America University Nationals from April 3 to 6.

In its first season of competition, Hesston won the men’s equipped team national championship. Freshmen Corbyn Oden and Joshua Gaitan both competed equipped for the Larks and posted totals of 740 kilograms and 630 kg respectively. Oden was voted the most outstanding equipped lifter of the entire meet. 

Brock Swedlund, freshman, finished 25th in the 74 kg raw weight class with a 180 kg squat, 105 kg bench and 200 kg deadlift for a total of 485 kg.

Chase Sexton, sophomore, and Connor Bear, freshman, competed in the 105 kg raw weight class finishing 13th and 17th respectively. Sexton posted a 642.5 kg total while Bear racked up a total of 602.5 kg.

Rylee Weishaupt, sophomore, earned a fourth-place finish in the women’s 57 kg raw weight class to achieve all-American status with a 295 kg total. Freshman Aiko Keanaaina placed 12th in the women’s 84+ kg weight class with a total of 325 kg.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Hesston College women’s disc golf team had a very impressive outing at the Collegiate Disc Golf National Championships from April 2 to 5.

Josalyn Wipf finished eighth in singles to achieve all-American status, the first All-American in program history. Wipf finished the singles round tied for eighth place with a score of 63 (+4) to earn a spot in the finals. The sophomore posted a 32 (+1) in the nine-hole playoff to earn all-America honors.

The Larks fielded two women’s duos in the team rounds – Wipf and sophomore Lily Corkill, and seniors Phoebe Kolb and Alyssa Burkholder. Wipf and Corkill finished sixth out of 30 teams posting a score of 245 (+7) across four rounds. This is the highest finish of any team in Hesston disc golf history. Kolb and Burkholder finished in 19th place with a total of 274 (+36).
