GREAT BEND, Kan. – Great Bend started strong, and finished strong, overcoming a fourth-quarter deficit in beating McPheson 29-16 on Friday in one of the more anticipated matchups of the first week of Kansas high school football.
Great Bend jumped to a quick 14-0 lead, with Ian Premer snagging a 43-yard touchdown pass, and Cooper Ohnmacht returning an interception 79 yards for another score.
McPherson settled in the second quarter, as Cory Muehler caught a 14-yard touchdown pass form Owen Fetsch, and Teegan Haines adding a 4-yard touchdown catch. Those scores cut the Great Bend lead to 14-13 at halftime.
McPherson took its first lead of the game on Blaise Hoover’s 46-yard field goal in the third quarter, but Great Bend finished the game well. Jacob Hall caught a 30-yard touchdown pass, and Colton Brack added a 2-yard touchdown.
Great Bend, coming off a rebound 7-3 season, has now won eight of its last nine games.
