WICHITA, Kan. – One of the greatest wins in Hutchinson High girls soccer history came when Jordan Downing helped lead the Salthawks to a regional championship, penalty-kick shootout win over Wichita East.
Now the Salthawks coach, Downing got a taste of that drama again Wednesday, as the Salthawks again beat Wichita East in a shootout after playing to a 3-3 draw in a consolation game at the Titan Classic in Wichita.
Freshman Rhyan Galyon had all three goals, but a late East goal tied the game up and sent it to a shootout.
In a seven-round nail-biter, the Salthawks won 6-5. Galyon, Sophie Gantz, Brynne Ackley, Libby Jackson, Ayla Booe and Lisa Selgrade converted their shots. Samara Jimenez had two saves in the shootout.
The Salthawks advanced to the fifth-place game at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wichita South. They will take on AVCTL Divison 1 rival Derby.
