ELYRIA, Kan. – In this week’s edition of Elyria Christian’s weekly roundup, the Eagles basketball teams compete at Sub-State. The boys team continues their strong season while the girls close off a successful year in the Sub-State semifinals.

BOYS BASKETBALL

After clinching their third straight Wheat State League regular season title with an undefeated 9-0 record against league opponents, Elyria Christian’s Boys Basketball team earned the No. 1 seed in their home region, getting the first round bye in the 1A-II Sub-State Quarterfinals. Not only did the team celebrate their league title before Sub-State, but they also congratulated their own Ty Romero, who signed to play basketball at William Jewell on Feb. 26.

The Eagles faced Waverly Monday, March 3 in the Sub-State semifinals following Waverly’s 70-22 first-round victory over Chetopa. The team struggled to find an early rhythm in the first quarter as it was their first game in 10 days. The team only led 19-17, but a 22-0 run pushed them through the second quarter and beyond.

They outscored Waverly 42-13 in the final three quarters, winning 61-30. The aforementioned Ty Romero led with 19 points and six assists while Gavin Robertson had 14 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

The team will now try to punch their ticket to the State Tournament with the Sub-State Championship game Saturday, March 8 vs. the No. 4 seed South Haven. The game will be played at Jerry Alexander Arena at Central Christian College in McPherson, tipping off at approximately 6:30 following the conclusion of the other Sub-State title game between Hartford and Lebo. If the Eagles win, they’ll head to the 1A-II State Tournament in Colby.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Elyria Christian Girls Basketball team closed out their regular season 11-8, finishing 7-1 in the Wheat State League to put then in 2nd place, just one game behind undefeated Little River. The record put them in as the No. 8 seed in their home region, meaning they would have to reach the Sub-State semifinals the hard way. The quarterfinal game was no problem for the Eagles though, defeating Altoona Midway 60-18 at home.

The Eagles played Saturday, March 1 against the No. 1 seed South Haven to try to reach the Sub-State semifinals, however they fell just short 56-29 on the road to end their season. However, it was still a successful season for the Eagles, as they played great in a competitive Wheat State League, finishing just a game behind one of the best teams in the state.
