STERLING, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – The Warriors put up a fight against the York University Panthers. The Warriors started Marcelo Fuentes as the goalie, and the Panthers started Jamie Watt.

Both teams were playing well, as it wasn’t until the 70th either team scored. The Panthers shot at Fuentes 7 times, and he only allowed one goal at the very end. There was a total of 12 saves by both the Warriors’ defense and Fuentes.

In the first 8 minutes, the Warriors had three corner kicks and a shot attempt by Daniel Stone deflected by Watt, but they could not find a way to get the ball in the net. Much of the game was spent in the middle third of the field, and neither team was able to spend much time in their respective attacking thirds.

At the start of the second period, York came out hot with shot attempt after shot attempt but nothing near the goal. The Warriors were playing a solid defensive game against the Panthers. Sterling had fewer opportunities to shoot on goal in the second period than in the first. Tomas Viralhadas scored York’s first and only goal of the match in the 70′. The shot was a rebound of a saved shot that Fuentes could not hang on to. The goal was assisted by Diego Yanes, bringing the final score to 0-1in favor of the Panthers. Sterling now sits with a 2-5-1 (1-2) record this season

Next up, Sterling faces Avila at home around 4:00 pm following the women’s game on Friday afternoon. It should be a well-attended game as the Warriors celebrate Homecoming this weekend.
