WAXAHACHIE, Tex. (CCCTigers.com) – Two Early Sophia Cook goals got the game started quickly, but as the saying goes, poke the bear, well in this instance, they poked the Lions and in particularly SAC points and goals leader Anna Bewley, who scored 4 goals to lead the Lions in the season finale in a 6-2 Tiger defeat.
Cooks big night looked like the Lions were going to spoil the final home match of the season for the Nelson University Lions. The Tigers were to strike 1st in the 10th minute with a Cook goal assisted by Racquel John. The Lions Bewley responded with a equalizer goal in minute 14. The Tigers took that, and would strike again with Cook’s 2nd goal, which was assisted by Baylee Smith in the 21st minute. The Tigers lead did not last long as the Lions Stephanie Hernandez scored an equalizer 2 minutes later, and then Bewley would strike again 2 minutes later to give the Lions the lead, one they would not give up the rest of the way. The Lions would add 2 more goals, including another by Bewley, and before you knew it, the Lions led 5-2 at the half.
Fifty-one seconds into the 2nd half, Bewley would score her 4th goal of the season, and clinch the SAC scoring and goal titles for the season. Despite falling behind 6-2, the Tigers would not go away in particularly Senior Racquel John who would get 3 quality shots at goal, which were saved by Lions goalie, Tanner Sorenson. That would be the final shots at goal for the Tigers as the season came to a close, in a 6-2 loss to the Lions, and ending their season 5-11.
In Coach Macharia’s 3rd season at the helm, the Tigers were able to win 5 matches this season, an improvement from 1 win a year ago. The Tigers were able to score 9 more goals than last season, and gave up 16 less goals this year than last, a dramatic improvement, and the type of trajectory that Coach Macharia is looking for in the development of his program.
