CANTON, Kan. – In this edition of Canton-Galva High School’s weekly sports roundup, we will recap the State Championships with Eagles Wrestling as well as Girls and Boys Basketball with the first rounds of 1A-DI Sub-State completed.
WRESTLING
Two Eagles boys wrestlers made the trip to Hays over the weekend to compete in the 3-1A Wrestling State Championships. Despite both wrestlers falling in two bouts each, a trip to the State Championships is always a memorable close to the season, especially with underclassmen wrestlers.
Jr. William Andreas (106) entered the championships with the unenviable task of being the 14th seed out of 16 wrestlers in his weight class following a 4th place finish in Regionals. The first round matchup against the No. 3 seed finished in less than a minute, but Andreas’ consolation round loss showed true grit from the junior. He would end up losing via fall, but it came after 5:25 mark, making it an enduring fight to the end.
So. Jaxon Chrislip (144) was one of just four underclassmen in his weight class, which included an undefeated wrestler as the No. 1 seed. Chrislip would end up not falling in either of his matches as both of them ended in scoring decisions. The first round bout with the No. 4 seed finished in a 14-2 Major Decision and his consolation round ended with a 4-2 score in the loss.
The team did not score any points in the tournament.
BASKETBALL
Girls Basketball:
After a 10-9 season finishing in 4th place in the Wheat State League, the girls team set their sights to Sub-State as the No. 7 seed in their home region.
They started the postseason at home Monday, Feb. 24 against the No. 10 seed Wichita-The Independent. The Eagles were able to push past them at home 40-33 to move onto the Sub-State Semifinals. Awaiting them, however, was the No. 2 seed Rosalina-Flinthills Saturday, March 1.. The Eagles fought to the bitter end, but fell on the road in a close bout 47-41 to end their season.
Their final record on the season is 11-10. Canton-Galva High School will host the Girls Sub-State Championship games Friday, March 7.
Boys Basketball:
The Eagles boys finished the regular season 11-8, ending in 5th place in the Wheat State League standings, setting them up as the No. 9 seed in Sub-State. The seeding made them the road team for the Sub-State Quarterfinals, however they pulled off the victory against No. 8 Rosalina-Flinthills 63-51 to move them onwards. They will be on the road against the No. 1 seed Olpe, who is 17-2 on the season and earned a first-round bye. They’ll play Monday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m.
Monday, March 3 marks the beginning of practices for spring sports, as CGHS prepares for the upcoming baseball, softball, golf, and track & field seasons.
