McPHERSON, Kan. – The McPherson Bullpups basketball teams took on two of their longest road trips of the season in the same week, splitting against the Hays Indians Tuesday, Feb. 6 and sweeping the Winfield Vikings Friday, Feb. 9.
GIRLS – Hays 44, McPherson 41
The game ended with multiple lead changes throughout the entire game, possibly highlighted by a lead change as time expired in the first half, with Jaela Thompson hitting a 25-foot three-pointer to give the Bullpups a 27-26 halftime edge. However, the Bullpups fell cold in the 2nd half, falling 44-41.
Jaela Thompson led the Bullpups with 12 points. Reanna Eilrich was the only other Bullpup in double-figures, finishing with 11.
BOYS – McPherson 56, Hays 45
Much like the girls’ game, the Bullpup boys and the Hays Indians traded lead changes in the first half, with the Bullpups finding themselves down 8-0 early and trailing by just one point at halftime, 30-29. Their defense held the Indians to just 15 second-half points, giving the Bullpups the eventual 56-45 win.
Kyden Thompson led all scorers with 18 points. Cory Muehler added 17 and Gabe Pyle finished with 14 points.
GIRLS – McPherson 59, Winfield 28
The Bullpup girls looked to avenge their loss with a divisional win on the road, doing just that thanks to a strong start, leading 36-8 at halftime. The Vikings caught fire in the 3rd quarter, but the lead was just too much, giving McPherson the 59-28 win.
Karter Alvord had a game-high 18 points. Jayla McLeod added 13 points.
BOYS – McPherson 73, Winfield 32
The Bullpup boys followed up with a strong start for themselves getting a 41-point win despite not having starter Gavin Wedel due to illness. The Bullpups led 41-21 at halftime, pushing forward into the 3rd and 4th quarters winning 73-32.
Gabe Pyle led with 21 points. Cory Muehler added 15 points.
The girls are now 12-4 (6-0 AVCTL DIII) on the season.
The boys are 16-0 (6-0 AVCTL DIII) after the two recent wins.
Both Bullpups teams will continue into divisional play Tuesday, Feb. 13 at home against Buhler. The girls will play at 6 p.m., the boys will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. Radio coverage on 98.9/1540 KMCP will begin at 5:40 p.m.
