WINFIELD, Kan. – The McPherson High Boys Soccer team needed overtime for the second straight match Tuesday, as they traveled to take on the Winfield Vikings.
“I thought we played pretty well in the first half especially against the wind but really struggled with making the most of our chances.” said Bullpup Head Coach Chris Adrian. Winfield was first to find the back of the net, as they would go into the half leading 1-0.
The Pups found the equalizer in the second half as Hayden Hoxie’s corner kick was volleyed in by Gavinn Henry. “The second half the boys kept the ball on Winfield’s side and put lots of pressure on them,” said Coach Adrian. With 5 minutes to go in regulation, the Bullpups would collect the go-ahead goal, but were whistled for offsides.
The game would remain a defensive battle in overtime, but Winfield would threaten McPherson in overtime and with one minute left in the contest, the Pups were unable to clear the ball, and Winfield would score the game-winner to defeat MHS 2-1.
“Tonight felt like a step back after last week’s win versus Junction City.” said Coach Adrian following the match, his team will have a quick turnaround, as they will be back on the road Thursday, as they’re set to travel to take on the Hutchinson Salthawks. The JV match is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Varsity will follow at 6:30 p.m.
The JV team won 3-0 on Tuesday, as Kunj Bhakta scored 2 goals, Noah Wilgers would also collect a goal. Leland Hept had 1 assist.
