Bullpup Weekly Sports Roundup Sep. 16-22; Updates From MHS Boys Soccer, Volleyball, Girls Golf, Cross Country, and Girls Tennis

Monday, September 16

Boys Soccer vs. Wichita-Classical: L 2-0

The McPherson High Boys Soccer team had a super busy week, playing three matches in the span of four days and coming off of an early season tournament.

In a rematch from the past weekend, the team fell to the Classical School of Wichita 2-0, just days after the Bullpups won 3-1. The Bullpups had multiple chances to score with 2 shots on goal, but the Classical offense was too much, scoring two goals on 8 shots on goal.

The JV team tied 1-1 against Classical with Ethan Young scoring the lone Bullpup goal.a


Tuesday, September 17

Volleyball Triangular at Circle:

vs. Circle: W 2-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-20)

vs. Augusta: W 2-0 (25-17, 25-21)

The team came into the week just 2-6 following a tough preseason tournament and splitting a triangular, but they bounced back Tuesday winning their matches against Circle and Augusta in Towanda.

The triangular started with a set loss to Circle, but the Bullpups bounced back to win the next two sets, defeating Circle 2-1. They then swept Augusta in two sets to increase their win streak to three games.

Haely Hagemann led the triangular with 17 total kills, Rylie Whitfield led with 33 assists, Ava Romero led with 16 digs, and Brooke Doile led with 5 blocks.

The team will host a triangular Tuesday, Sep. 24 against Wichita-Collegiate and Wellington.

 

Boys Soccer at El Dorado: W 4-0

The Boys Soccer team followed up their Monday defeat with a victory just a day later on the road, defeating El Dorado 4-0.

Despite the game being their 5th in 7 days, the team held their own offensively with 14 SOG, got the shutout victory, and avoided injury. Manny Morales started the scoring in the first half, followed by Borin Heang and Yahir Valadez with a PK to put the Bullpups up 3-0 at halftime. Heang scored his second goal of the contest halfway through the second half after a great pass from Ben Bocox, who earned the assist.


Thursday, September 19

Girls Golf at McPherson Invitational: 6th

The Bullpups continued their strong start to the season with a home invitational Thursday at Turkey Creek Golf Course, where they finished 6th out of 14 teams.

The team finished with a combined score of 350, finishing just three strokes shy of Buhler in 5th place and 40 strokes short of first place Kapaun Mount Carmel. Brodie Kuhn led all Bullpups with a personal-best score of 73 and Andi Buschbom finished close behind in 11th with a score of 79. Reese Elliott also had a personal best score of 85.

The team’s next event will be an invitational at Hesston Friday, Sep. 27.

 

Girls Tennis Invitational at Buhler: 2nd

The McPherson High Girl’s Tennis team continued strong, finishing 2nd in the Buhler Invitational, just four points behind Wichita-Classical.

The tournament started at 9:00 a.m., earlier than originally scheduled, due to hot temperatures in the area. In the Singles tournaments, Maryn Sandbo finished in 3rd with a record of 3-1 and Dragon Rodriguez finished 6th with a 2-2 record.

In the Doubles tournaments, Avery Unruh / Quinn Liebl finished 2nd going 2-1 and Avery Eveland / Erin Olson finished 4th with a 2-2 record.

The team will prepare for the Doug Gayer classic in McPherson Tuesday, Sep. 24.

 

Cross Country at Buhler: Boys 4th, Girls 6th

The Cross Country teams headed to Hutchinson in the Buhler meet to finish towards the top of the leaderboards with the boys finishing in 4th and the girls in 6th.

The boys team was led by Caleb Muehler and Ethan Elder, who both medaled. Muehler finished 2nd with a time of 17:11 and Elder finished 8th with 17:41.

The girls team finished in 6th in the invite, led by medalists Lexi Patterson and Eva Ramey, who finished 13th and 14th respectively with times of 22:17.

 

Boys Soccer vs. Salina South: L 4-0

Following their Tuesday victory, the Boys Soccer team played their third game in four days as well as their 6th in 9 days, falling in a tough home test to Salina-South 4-0.

The team only had one day of recovery following their shutout victory to El Dorado Tuesday on the road and were unable to produce offensively. The Bullpups had only three shots on goal while allowing 17 by South, four of which finding the back of the net.

The varsity team is now 3-4 on the season, but will face rival Buhler at home Tuesday, Sep. 24 in what will be their only match of the week.

The JV team tied again with Salina South 1-1.
