CHANUTE, Kan. – The McPherson Bullpup football team took a nearly two-and-a-half hour long road trip to Chanute for their first road game of the season to face the undefeated Blue Comets, falling 27-14.
The Bullpups started strong, holding the high-powered Chanute offense to a three-and-out then scored on a two-play drive on offense. The drive started with a 40 yard pass to Bishop Brown then a 3-yard rushing TD from Brock Richardson finished the drive to put McPherson up 7-0.
That would be the only Bullpup score until late in the 4th quarter.
Chanute rallied back with a 62-yard screen pass TD, then marched down the field on the next drive ending with a rushing TD to put the Bullpups down 14-7. Chanute’s stifling defense mixed with offensive mistakes by McPherson ballooned them to trail 27-7 late in the 4th quarter.
The Bullpups didn’t back down, forcing a fumble in Chanute’s final possession with them trying to run down the clock, giving McPherson a slim, but plausible, chance to storm back. Carter Allen found Bishop Brown for a 14 yard touchdown with less than a minute remaining to make it 27-14, but the Bullpups were unable to get the ball back on offense.
The McPherson defense allowed 359 total yards of Chanute’s offense (221 passing, 138 rushing) while adding 271 yards of their own (239 passing, 32 rushing). The Bullpups also won the turnover battle, forcing two fumbles without committing any, keeping this year’s tally of turnovers at zero.
