AUGUSTA, Kan. – The McPherson High School girls soccer team bounced back from a tough McPherson Invitational with a 2-0 victory on the road against Augusta.
Both Bullpup goals came in the first half. Baylee Simmelink scored the first goal, assisted by Riggs Kuhn, then Caitlyn Pearson put the Bullpups up by multiple goals early with the second goal. The defense held true in the second half, giving McPherson the shutout victory.
JV also won 4-0.
Remarks from head coach Chris Adrian:
[Tuesday] was a step in the right direction for the team. After a tough tournament last week, the girls faced an undefeated and talented Augusta team and responded with a comfortable win away from home. There was a different feel to the team. Everyone was relaxed, full of positive energy, and played with a lot more confidence. It was really good to see.
Our back line of Riggs Kuhn, Naomi Vesser, and Brodie Kuhn played amazing limiting Augusta to only one shot on target. That one shot was a big 1v1 opportunity but Alyssa came up with a huge save with her feet. Baylee Simmelink got the scoring started with a powerful shot off a nice cross from Riggs. Shortly after, Caitlin Pearson scored a long range free kick.
We had all the momentum after the two quick goals but allowed Augusta to hang around. The second half we played into a strong wind but that is when the girls played their best. The girls absolutely controlled the game and Alyssa didn’t have to make a single save in the second half.
I still believe these girls have another gear they can find but tonight they played much better than last week and we will keep on looking to improve one day at a time.
The Bullpups are now 3-2 on the season.
