McPHERSON, Kan. (MacBulldogs.com) — It was a completely dominant performance by MC as the Bulldogs rolled over the Sterling College Warriors on Wednesday (Oct 2), 10-1.
The scoring came in bunches for MC early on and came from the dynamic duo of Sijmen Van Der Zee and Nathan Van Wyck. Van Der Zee scored the first goal of the contest in the 14th minute with Van Wyck setting him up perfectly on a crossing pass. Just a mere 14 seconds later, Van Der Zee returned the favor by setting up Van Wyck’s first of three goals of the day. Van Wyck struck again thanks to another great setup pass by Van Der Zee in the 15th minute.
Abdul Kanu also benefited from Van Der Zee’s playmaking in the 21st minute to make it a 4-0 lead for the Bulldogs. Eric Mendoza and Zane Sullivan helped the Bulldogs pour it on, making it a 6-0 lead for MC heading into halftime.
Van Wyck secured the hat trick just 58 seconds into the 2nd half after goalkeeper Keito Takehara, who recorded a pair of saves on the day, boomed a kick that set up the goal. Sterling finally cracked the scoreboard in the 72nd minute, but the Bulldogs added a trio of goals to secure the statement victory.
The 10 goals scored by the Bulldogs mark the first time since a 1997 win against Southwestern that the MC men’s soccer team has scored double-digit goals and is tied for the second most scored in a game by a men’s soccer club.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, October 5 for a road matchup against Friends University.
