SALINA, Kan. (MacBulldogs.com) — The McPherson College women’s tennis team had a strong performance at the ITA Regional Championship, which concluded Sunday.
Head coach Keiran President‘s squad put a doubles team in the finals and had multiple solid performances in singles action.
Camila Sanchez cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 opening round victory in singles play. After dispatching her opponent by a score of 6-0, 6-2, Sanchez recorded a 4-6, 6-1 (10-3) win in the round of 16. However, she lost in the quarterfinals by a count of 6-3, 6-2.
Alexa Garcia opened singles action with a 6-4, 6-4 victory, In the second round, she bested her foe by a score of 6-2, 6-4 but lost in the round of 32 in a tightly contested 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 3-10) match.
Taimi Nashiku tallied a 6-4, 6-0 win in the first round. In the second round of play, she upended her foe 4-6, 6-4 (10-3) before falling in the round of 32 by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Vanessa Hofer picked up a hard-fought 1-6, 7-6 (7-1), 10-4 victory in the first round before suffering a 6-0, 6-3 defeat in the second round.
Lauren van Drunen dropped her opening-round match by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action, the duo of Nashiku and Sanchez tallied an 8-3 victory in the first round and cruised to the quarterfinals with an 8-2 win in the second round. In the quarterfinals, the Bulldogs notched an 8-1 win, securing a spot in the semifinals. They advanced to the finals after an 8-2 win but lost a 6-0, 6-2 match in the finals.
The tandem of Garcia and Hofer picked up a hard-fought 9-7 win in the first round. However, the two lost by a score of 8-6 in the second round of play.
Madison Dobson and Isabella Ellerbee lost in the first round by a score of 8-0.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, Sept. 28 at the KCAC Fall Invitational in North Newton, Kan.
