HESSTON, Kan. – In a rematch of games played on December 17 in Lindsborg, the Hesston Swathers picked up a home sweep of the Smoky Valley Vikings on Friday night. The highlight of the night saw Kendal Brueggen become the all-time leading scorer for Hesston as she led the top-ranked Swathers to a 17-point win. A big fourth quarter run for the Hesston boys gave them a resounding win in the nightcap.
Girls-Hesston 54, Smoky Valley 37 – Kendal Brueggen needed 15 points coming into the game to set the all-time scoring record for Hesston girls basketball. In the first meeting with Smoky Valley, she scored 33, so the watch was on. With a three-pointer late in the first half, Brueggen reached 16 points for the game and surpassed the previous record of 1,578 points. Hesston, #1 in the latest KBCA 3A rankings, had a 9-8 lead after the first quarter, but 12 points from Brueggen in the second helped them to a 26-12 lead at half. A 20-10 third quarter put the Swathers up by 24 after three on their way to the 17-point victory. Brueggen finished with 25 points and now has 1,589 for her career. Abby Proctor added 11 points for the Swathers as they are now 16-0 on the season. Kat Blanchat scored in double figures for the 15th time in 17 games for the Vikings as she led the way with 22 points including a 13-14 mark at the free throw line. Smoky Valley fell to 6-11 with the loss.

Boys-Hesston 64, Smoky Valley 19 – Hesston came out the gates strong with a 16-6 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Vikings 14-4 in the second to take a 30-10 lead by halftime. Reed Friesen had 13 first half points to set the pace for the night. It was a 14-9 edge for Hesston in the third quarter, but the Vikings wouldn’t score the rest of the night as the Swathers put up a 20-0 fourth quarter for the 45-point win. Friesen finished with 19 points to lead all scorers. Ty Unruh had 17 including four three-pointers and eight points in the final quarter. The Swathers, ranked #6 in the KBCA 3A poll this week, improved to 14-2 overall. Ty Heitschmidt led Smoky Valley, scoring ten of their 19 points. The Vikings are now 3-14 for the season.
