HILLSBORO, Kan. (TaborBluejays.com) – Despite it being the season opener for several athletes, the Bluejays were pleased with their performance at yesterday’s meet. Competing against a diverse field—including familiar KCAC rivals and some of the most dominant JUCO programs in the nation—provided valuable experience, and the Bluejays made significant strides.
Leading the way for the Bluejay men was Vance Shewey, who finished a strong 2nd out of 36 competitors in the High Jump. Freshman Ivan Jirak also turned heads, placing 7th in the Shot Put with a throw of 14.86m. On the women’s side, the 4x800m relay team, consisting of Julianna Maxfield, Kylie Arnold, Sydnee Gardner, and Sonya Zimmerman, secured 3rd place with a time of 9:55.66. Sophomore D’Miya Cox made an impressive debut in the Triple Jump, earning a 9th-place finish. Meanwhile, senior Adrienne Selzer competed in the 3,000-meter run, crossing the finish line with a time of 11:10.94, placing 11th out of 38 runners in the field.
Coach Aaron Capehart shared his thoughts on the team’s performance:
“Coach Wood and I are both very pleased with how the meet went, especially considering that it was the first for many of our athletes this season. We’ve been focusing on technical aspects and race strategies, and it was great to see our athletes execute those skills so well. More importantly, we’re seeing our athletes build confidence in their abilities, pushing themselves to new limits in competition. Given where we are in the season, we’re ahead of where we expected to be. This meet served as a great indicator of our current level, and it shows us what we need to focus on as we prepare for the conference meet in just three weeks.”
The Bluejays will take the week to rest and recharge as they prepare for their next meet, the Washburn Open, scheduled for January 31st to February 1st.
