Barton Wrestling Goes 1-1 at Colby; Mader and Agudzi-Addo Go a Perfect 2-0

GREAT BEND, Kan. (BartonSports.com) – The Barton Community College wrestling team returned to conference play Thursday evening splitting its doubleheader out on the road at the Colby Event Center in Colby, Kansas.

The Cougars started the night falling to No. 13 Labette 33-21 before coming back in the nightcap to defeat the host Trojans 27-24 to claim the first conference victory of the season.

The results move Barton to 1-4 in conference action and 3-13 overall. The Cougars will return to tournament action this Saturday traveling to Miami, Oklahoma for the Golden Norseman Open before closing out the conference slate next Tuesday in Goodland, Kansas, as the Cougars will take on Cloud County Community College and host No. 5 Fort Hays Tech Northwest

On the night, Jarret Mader (149-pounds) and Nathan Agudzi-Addo (285-pounds) fueled the Cougar lineup each winning both their matches while five other Cougars delivered a victory on the evening.

Barton went a combined 9-11 on the mat while being open at 197-pounds going 4-6 against the Cardinals and 5-5 against Colby with a season high four pins in the victory over the Trojans.

Benefitting behind a pair of open weight classes in the opener, Jamal Garrett (125-pounds) provided Barton it’s lone lead of the evening with a forfeit victory.

Suffering a pair of technical falls to trail 10-6, sophomore Jarrett Mader (149-pounds) overcame an early 1-0 deficit capturing the final four points to secure a 4-1 decision over Talan Braswell and craw the Cougars within one, 10-9.

Following a fall at 157-pounds, Alonso Frances-Aguilar delivered his lone win of the night and second dual victory of the season with the Cardinals open at 165-pounds keeping Barton within arm’s reach, 16-15.

Labette took the next three matches in clinching the dual. Sam Duling defeated Derek Truman with a 2:50 fall at 174-pounds with Rodney Trotter beating Edgar Duarte Quiroz by a 21-5 tech fall in the 184-weight class, and No. 5 ranked Matthew Marcum receiving a 197-pound forfeit victory.

Making quick work in the final match of the dual, Aguidzi-Addo needed just 36-seconds to pin Augustus Johns to rest the score at 33-21.

Seeking revenge from a 25-24 loss to the Trojans back in early November, the Cougars immediately feel behind the eight ball just two bouts in trailing 9-0 following Garrett’s short end 8-6 decision at 125-pounds and Joshua “AJ” Almanza suffering a 0:40 fall at 133-pounds.

Heading into the final two minutes trailing 5-0 and later 10-8 midway through the third, Skyler McMullen swung the momentum in favor of the Cougars picking up his lone win of the evening with a late third period 6:54 fall over Xzavier Martinez.

Mader preserved the momentum swing and his perfect 2-0 night on the mat at 149-pounds supplying a 3:28 back flattening over the Trojans’ Jarradarrious Goolsby giving Barton the 12-9 match.

Suffering a second period fall in his first bout of the evening to No. 3 ranked Davion King of Labette, sophomore Kayden Blake bounced back to continue Barton’s run of 15-straight points with a 4-1 decision.

Dropping a late 6-5 decision at 165-pounds, Truman countered at 174-pounds supplying Barton’s third pin of the dual just 41-seconds into the third frame to supply a 21-12 match lead before a Trojan 6-0 response had the Cougars on the wrong side at 24-21, heading into the final bout after a fall at 184 and open weight at 197.

Anchoring the lineup in the 285-division, Agudzi-Addo answered the call clinching the match victory with his second first-period fall of the night putting Barton on-top 27-24 and avenging the earlier season loss to the Trojans.

In the lone exhibition match, Logan Buchanan dropped a 20-3 tech fall to Ethan Anderson of Colby at 285-pounds.
