It was a successful weekend for many Ad Astra Radio area girls wrestlers at the KSHSAA 3-2-1A Regionals across the state. The schools in the classification were split west and east with the west regional in Russell and the east in Rossville.
At the Russell regional meet, three area wrestlers claimed championships and 24 individuals qualified for the 3-2-1A State Tournament to be held February 28 and March 1 at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Lyons junior Kennedy Grizzle won the 110# weight class with a 7-4 decision over Cadence Koch of Oakley, moving to 37-4 on the season. Nevaeh Graves, a sophomore from Hoisington, took the gold at 170#, beating Oakley’s Atavia Cain by fall in 5:30. Graves is 27-3 heading into state. At 235#, Hoisington senior Haylee Holinde moved to 18-3 after winning the regional title by fall over Emma Hahn of Ellinwood in 3:14.
In the eastern portion of the listening area, teams were competing at Rossville. Two wrestlers claimed regional titles and 22 total athletes are headed to the state tournament. Remington senior Camila Martinez took the regional title at 110# with a win by fall over Callie Collins of Cherryvale in 1:50. Martinez is now 32-4 on the year. At 155#, Humboldt junior Taevyn Baylor claimed the gold with a win by fall over Savanah Johnson of Council Grove. Baylor is 37-3 heading into state.
