HAYS, Kan. – A big group of wrestlers from the Ad Astra Radio central, east and west areas competed at the 3-2-1A State Championships at Gross Memorial Coliseum this weekend. A total of 16 wrestlers brought home medals from the tournament. Three wrestlers made the championship match in their respective weight classes, but they all fell just short of the ultimate prize as runners-up.
At 150#, Lyons sophomore Jace Grizzle opened with a fall in just 51 seconds over Noah Howard of Fredonia. He followed that up with two straight technical fall wins, beating Dayton Fromholtz of St. Francis 17-2 in the quarterfinals and Seth Welch of Erie 18-1 in the semis. In a hard fought championship match, Grizzle fell just short against Etson Moreno of Hoxie by a 4-2 decision, finishing his season at 38-3.
Ellsworth junior Keegan Urbanek was the state runner-up at 190#. He opened with a win by fall in just 34 seconds over Gavin Bowman of Douglass and then won by fall over Logan Seifried of Cimarron in the quarters in 2:46. The semifinals saw an area matchup as Urbanek beat Collin Schreiner of Kingman by a 7-4 decision to move to the championship match. Urbanek faced a tough opponent in Hoxie’s Sam Watkins in the final, losing by fall in 25 seconds. He finished his season at 33-7 for the Bearcats.
Jayhawk-Linn sophomore Landon Higgins finished in second place at 106#. He opened with an 18-11 decision over Dante De Virgilio of Haven and followed with a win by fall over Garden Plain’s Nate Eck in 3:12. In the semis, Higgins won an 11-2 major decision over Xzander Donner of Russell. Norton’s Kaleb Keiswetter got the better of Higgins in the finals, taking a 12-3 major decision. Higgins finished the season at 35-2.
Haven senior Jacob Moore (126#), Hoisington senior Teron Kraft (175#) and Humboldt senior Cole Mathes (190#) all brought home third place medals. Fourth place finishes went to Garden Plain freshman Nate Eck (106#), Jayhawk-Linn junior Denton White (126#) and Erie senior Seth Welch (150#). Finishing in fifth place were Erie senior Aiden Wilson (113#), Ellsworth senior Will Donley (138#), Ellsworth junior Micah Galvan (175#) and Kingman senior Collin Schreiner (190#). Jayhawk-Linn sophomore Tanner Holt (113#), Haven junior Tanner Loughrie (132#) and Marion senior Brian Nguyen (215#) all finished sixth place.
